Re-Imagining What We Own & Buying Vintage
Feb 15th 2022 Staff
As we continue to explore the 5 biggest trends in 2022 home design & décor here, our lighting designers engage in a daily dance at our showroom. It’s called “how do we skirt the supply chain issues and access the lighting the customer wants?” For the most part we’re successful thanks to strong partnerships with artisans, makers and vendors. We provide A LOT of lighting to customers, renovators, builders, and developers online and in our showroom.
The trend to embrace vintage and inherited furniture has blown into our lives. The pandemic has created a perfect storm for repurposing used and antique furniture. Not a houseful, but a pair of charming chairs (joining those you have) at each end of a dining table. Or, an old sideboard finding new life as a TV stand. And, wonderful occasional tables in a new role as nightstands in your bedroom. It’s furniture with the power to influence storytelling while bringing a sense of history and attitude into a space.
As we help customers choose lighting, we’re privy to Instagram and Pinterest pics they’re inspired by, and storyboards of furnishings they’ve chosen. We help them source lighting that’s perfect for today's homes and energy concerns that complements their “new” furnishings. It’s like the ultimate circular economy in home furnishings. You could buy a piece of furniture off the internet and wait for 6-8 months for delivery. Or you can repurpose old furniture and inherited family pieces, or shop locally from folks like us that cultivate vendor relationships, buying responsibly sourced items.
You may need to re-imagine your vintage or inherited furniture. If a must-keep inherited piece or potential vintage or used piece is in your sites think through these questions:
- How do you plan to make this piece work?
- Where can it work for you and your house?
- What use can it have?
- How can you modify the piece to fit your style?
These are your options: you can re-purpose it, relocate it, paint it, refinish it, replace hardware or other details, and/or re-upholster it. And the one thing we love most? It’s a “green” decision that customers are opting for instead of cheaply made “fast furniture.” Shopping vintage and local businesses enables sustainability-minded shoppers to reduce their carbon footprint, all while supporting small, independent businesses like us.
The lighting specialists at Madison Lighting can help you choose the right light with a nod to vintage, or that mid-century modern vibe, or even a sleek contemporary pop. We’ve got inspiration here and on Instagram.
