Great Light in the Kitchen
Aug 29th 2025 Staff
It’s something about the abundance of veggies from the farmer’s market, the co-op or Metcalfe’s, it just pulls us into the kitchen in fall. There, in the kitchen, it immediately becomes obvious: the loss of 84 minutes of daylight in August! Light affects all of us, and we’d argue the lack of light is most difficult in the kitchen.
Today’s kitchens are furnished like living room spaces, warm, inviting. It’s how we spend our family time, it’s where everyone gathers when we throw a party, it’s where we like to be on weekend mornings. Working with customers, builders, interior designers we are seeing the trends come to life: more color, more texture in wood, stone, tile, and hardware. And the lighting? It pulls your personal style into the kitchen. It glows over the island. It sparkles in the eyes of family and friends. It makes you feel at home.
Are you planning a reno? Building a new house? Redecorating? Zhuzhing? Nothing compares to making your kitchen more lively, interesting, appealing with light. Layering light is super important and in the kitchen because of all the tasks we use the kitchen for.
Lighting the countertops for chopping veggies and arranging food on plates. We use under cabinet lighting and recessed ceiling lighting along the lead edge of the countertops for this. With LED these additions have become simple to do.
Pendants or a linear light over the island? Check. A sweet chandelier over your kitchen table? Ditto. These fixtures are the art, the personality or your kitchen. Have fun with them and choose something you love.
With glass cabinets consider lighting the interior. With open shelving be sure to put a sconce over the top to cast a little light on the items you reach for all the time. A drinks station in the kitchen? Lighting will make it welcoming all day long.
Please put everything on dimmer switches. It will make a big difference in how you use the kitchen at different times of day, for breakfast, school projects, creating pastry, pouring the cocktails and mocktails.
