Funny the things you notice. On the set of the hit TV show Empire, the character Jamal has this incredible loft. The kitchen is earthy and sleek, with a Carrera marble-topped island, high-gloss cabinets, and appliances from Sub-Zero and Wolf. But it was the kitchen’s copper pendants that caught my eye. They’re orb-like. They captivated us and now we’re seeing orbs everywhere. “The Orb.” It earned a spot on our 5 Trends to Try this year.

We see the orb in the base of an unpolished brass lamp, in the glass orbs of wall sconce lighting and in chandeliers with abundance. It’s a Palm Beach kind of modernism that speaks to us, right here in the Midwest. Layering the vibrant colors of the springs and the neutrals of an arid desert would be unexpected to some. But when you have a view, there’s nothing more lovely than the long, floor to ceiling windows of those modern ranch homes that made the mid-twentieth century kind of special. And here in Madison, Wisconsin, we’ve got ranch homes just waiting for their moment in the sun.

If you decide on adding California-cool to your mid-century design think grass-cloth covered walls in pewter and eye-popping colors like acid green, peacock feather blue, and deep turquoise in the upholstery and drapes. Think slubby silks and deep pile velvets in unique forms and statement piece furniture. And be sure to feature the orb in your lighting.

Got the ranch but not the view? That’s easy to fix with some cool landscaping and our outdoor lighting. Give yourself some eye candy outside those windows and watch the seasons go by like a movie through the glass. Lit by landscape lighting, create an outdoor space you’ll live in almost all year round, and light it for night to create the drama. Skip the deck, we’re talking terrace here- maybe blocks of concrete with strips of grass between them, and low seating that doesn’t obstruct the view. Picture swaths of color out there with cushions in Sunbrella fabric that pull your interior colors outside. We’ll give you Cali-cool when we light the night.

It’s early spring in Wisconsin and we’ve been steeped in HGTV and shelter magazines on these cold evenings, so maybe this idea came out of the blue to you. But we’ve got the notion that some locals are craving that mid-century modern attitude. Stop by our Watts Road showroom and check out some of our new lighting. You just might be inspired to make your “new” old ranch house a sanctuary from another era.
