Bye bye bland bedrooms

Bye bye bland bedrooms

Ask any weary human and they’ll tell you; we love our bedrooms. To comfort, to rest, to renew your soul, you head for your own space. If you entertain houseguests, have growing children, adult kids on school breaks, well that just caps it. You shut the door and decompress. Bedrooms are no longer a spartan space. They are thoughtful spaces to retreat to. We love a reading nook with a quirky light fixture that makes it home. We adore a banquette with upholstered seating in a corner to bring a light supper in or craft a puzzle. It doesn’t need to be a big bedroom, just a place made for you.

There’s a thread that runs through this trend; we are spending more time at home with family and guests. “Home” is no longer a place to check your mail and repack your suitcase. It’s a destination for you and your besties. So, while the kids and their friends take over the kitchen and family room you retreat to your bedroom with a book. We’ve created lighting plans with sconces, pendants, table and floor lamps, and chandeliers for window seats, daybeds, and lounge areas as small as a corner carved out for both a book and a nap.

And here comes the trend to adding a banquette for your bedroom. An underutilized bedroom corner finds it’s zen with comfy upholstery, a smallish or slimmed down dining table, a splash of color, and some great lighting to bring function to your style. Proportion is key here, not too small or too crowded, it needs air to feel calming as you share your day over a glass of wine, read the Sunday papers over coffee, and seriously take a break over a jigsaw puzzle in the quiet.
