The 2018 Color of the Year was just announced and its “Gold Rush,” a glitzy champagne gold that warms up a room like a sunrise in July. But we don’t think of it as big news here because we have already seen lighting in gold, champagne and brass finishes igniting rooms with a chic note. Paired with former award-winning colors like velvety navy and deep moss green in décor, gold finishes give the room a fresh appeal. As we turn the corner into the holidays, gold finished lighting for the kitchen as well as dining and entertaining areas is flying out of the showroom.

I’m a maximalist. What’s a holiday season without glitz? Enough of the white walls and greige furniture with a simple and (sadly) underdressed tree. This is how I kick off the season: I pull out my mom’s cocktail apron from the ‘50’s and mix martinis for my girlfriends while we open gifts from each other. Later, I hang the kid’s stockings on the mantle, and no, they do not match. I add a few greens to the mantle and tuck in treasured framed pictures of my kids (and my dog!) with Santa. I hang ornaments from my fab chandelier and arrange some greens in a vase on the table below.

Minimalism has its place, like in my laundry room, but during the holidays go for the gold. A gift for the house? You bet. A beautiful chandelier to show off your fave ornaments on this holiday and for many to come. A sculptural pendant in the front hall that warms your heart when you get home every night and holds a little nosegay of mistletoe, too. Maximalist? Join me proudly!
